"Prey For Us" art installation
|
"Prey For Us". Mixed media installation at Presa House Gallery consisting of purple heart plants in soil and water, deconstructed decoy ducks, a metal hook, and colored lights.
This is my first art installation, and it repeats elements found in my 2D work, like decoy ducks. Nearly 100 plastic ducks, a tool for hunting by luring ducks to safe waterways, were deconstructed and resembled with nuts and bolts. While this takes away their power, the resulting reshaped tapestry of parts is reminiscent of a fly fishing lure, another tool used by fishermen to hide the hook and the dangerous intent. The amassed shape drapes onto the floor like a wedding dress with a large metal hook adorned at the top. The 100 purple heart plants representing a personal struggle surround the hanging decoy ducks structure as a type of exposure therapy. Colored lights create an overall surreal spiritual experience inspired by faith's importance by those I interviewed when discussing their ability to forgive. |
"Soltar," Acrylic on 4x4x4 ft. fiberglass skull.
The purple heart plant, a common and colorful landscaping element, repeats throughout the piece. Growing up, I associated it with bad memories from my neighborhood, and over time, I realized my dislike for it was tied to that past. The coral snake, another familiar figure from my backyard, symbolizes a "bad memory" rooted in our evolutionary survival instinct. Venomous yet not inherently dangerous, it serves as a reminder to acknowledge fear, move forward, and reconcile the past. This work explores nature vs. nurture and the hope of living a life unburdened by distrust.
